Automatic 3D Mapping of Complex Fractionated Atrial Electrograms (CFAE) in Patients with Paroxysmal and Persistent Atrial Fibrillation

Abstract: CFAE software can visualize the spatial distribution of CFAE in AF. CFAE in persistent AF were observed in more regions of LA compared to paroxysmal AF in which CFAE concentrated on the PV. Automatically detected CFAE match well with ablation sites targeted by operators.

“…Of interest, the areas of CFAEs were more extensive in the permanent form of AF. These findings were confirmed in the report by Wu et al [39]. In their study of 16 patients (6 paroxysmal, 10 persistent) CFAEs were distributed in four distinct areas of the left atrium.…”

“…A 3.5-mm saline-irrigated radiofrequency catheter (Navi-Star Thermocool™; Biosense-Webster) was used to map left atrium. The shortest complex interval (SCI) map was used to visualize CFAE on three-dimensional anatomic structure of left atrium as described by Wu et al [15]. CFAE was defined by the system based on the peak-to-peak interval in milliseconds.…”

“…In the study by Wu et. al (Wu et al, 2008), 82.5% of effective sites with significant AF cycle length prolongation after ablation were judged retrospectively as CFAEs sites (defined as shortest cycle interval between 60 − 120 ms) . Number of A-EGMs in experimental dataset was limited and representative A-EGMs were preselected based on quality from vast amount of data obtained during left-atrial mapping.…”
