Abstract:At present, most carbon fibers are made from non-renewable polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Substantial efforts have been made to replace the need for petroleum-based precursors for carbon fiber production. Interestingly, lignin is a carbon fiber precursor material that is cheap, highly available, and sustainable. Sub-micron scale lignin-based carbon nanofibers could find use in numerous areas, such as electronic devices, batteries, supercapacitors, and low-cost, high performance structural composite materials. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
