Messaging and communication is a critical aspect of next generation Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems where interactions among devices, software systems/services and end-users is the expected mode of operation. Given the diverse and changing communication needs of entities, the data exchange interactions may assume different protocols (MQTT, CoAP, HTTP) and interaction paradigms (point to point, multicast, unicast). In this paper, we address the issue of supporting adaptive communications in IoT systems through a mediation-based architecture for data exchange. Here, components called mediators support protocol translation to bridge the heterogeneity gap. Aiming to provide a placement of mediators to nodes, we introduce an integer linear programming solution that takes as input: a set of Edge nodes, IoT devices, and networking semantics. Our proposed solution achieves adaptive placement resulting in timely interactions between IoT devices for larger topologies of IoT spaces. Internet of Things (IoT) is a novel paradigm, which not only facilitates a large number of devices to be ubiquitously connected over the Internet but also provides a mechanism to remotely control these devices. The IoT is pervasive and is almost an integral part of our daily life. These connected devices often obtain user's personal data and store it online. The security of collected data is a big concern in recent time. As devices are becoming increasingly connected, privacy and security issues become more and more critical and these need to be addressed on an urgent basis.IoT implementations and devices are eminently prone to threats that could compromise the security and privacy of the consumers, which, in turn, could influence its practical deployment. In recent past, some research has been carried out to secure IoT devices with an intention to alleviate the security concerns of users. There have been research on blockchain technologies to tackle the privacy and security issues of the collected data in IoT. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the security and privacy issues in IoT systems. To this effect, the paper examines the security issues at each layer in the IoT protocol stack, identifies the under-lying challenges and key security requirements and provides a brief overview of existing security solutions to safeguard the IoT from the layered context.

Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems are becoming increasingly complex, heterogeneous and pervasive, integrating a variety of physical devices, virtual services, and communication protocols. Such heterogeneity presents an obstacle especially for interactions between devices of different systems that encounter each other at run time. Mediation services have been proposed to facilitate such direct communication by translating between messaging protocols, interfacing different middlewares, etc. However, the decision of where to place a mediation service within an IoT topology has repercussions and is in some cases critical for satisfying system objectives. In this paper, we propose an integer linear programming solution to optimize the placement decision specifically in terms of energy consumption. Our solution takes into account the energy consumed by each interaction at each device along the data transfer paths. Through simulations that use topologies of real-world IoT systems, we show the effect of our approach on energy consumption, messaging delay, and placement decision time. Our algorithm outperforms a state-of-theart solution in terms of reducing energy consumption by almost a third in large-scale typologies. We also demonstrate the feasibility of our approach in terms of overhead.
