Automated synthesis of electromechanical design configurations from empirical analysis of function to form mapping

Abstract: For an ideal design process, designers envision a configuration of components prior to determining dimensions or sizes of these components. Given the breadth of the component space, the design of any future artifact must be carefully planned to take advantage of the diverse set of possibilities. We conjecture that computational design tools could be developed to help designers navigate the design space in creating configurations from detailed specifications of function. In this research, a methodology is devel… Show more

“…Structure-behaviourfunction modelling language has been developed for the representation of complex engineering systems using teleological modelling (Goel, Rugaber, and Vattam 2009). One of the important recent studies is the development of a computational methodology as a formal language for generating design configurations or forms from a functional description based on an empirical analysis of consumer products (Kurtoglu and Campbell 2009). Also, agent technology is used to develop a framework for guiding the conceptual design of mechanical products (Cao et al 2008;Cao and Fu 2011).…”

“…They vary from numerical optimization approaches of partial design problems for single products (Ziv-Av and Reich, 2005), through heuristics for module optimization in product families (Jiao et al, 2008), to morphological analysis methods for incremental design improvements (Kurtoglu and Campbell, 2009). Based on Steward's work (Steward, 1981), a number of additional (computational) matrix-based techniques have been proposed over the years (Eppinger and Browning, 2012).…”

“…Alternatively, there are formalized processes to obtain feasible architectures from the requirements. By using a mapping between functions and components, a list of functional requirements can automatically be converted into feasible architectures [4]. Another formalized process, is the functionalbehaviour-state method that decomposes a function into subfunctions until these can be linked to physical properties [5].…”
