Automated Separation of Uranium and Plutonium from Environmental Swipe Samples for Multiple Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Abstract: A fully automated method for the separation of low-concentration uranium from plutonium in environmental swipe samples has been developed. The offline chromatography system features renewable 1 mL Eichrom TEVA and UTEVA column generation from bulk resin slurry. Discrete fractions of the separated actinides are delivered into user defined vials for future analysis. Clean room background levels were achieved outside of a cleanroom environment with this method. Purification of uranium and plutonium from various s… Show more

“…The prepFAST MC® systems can overcome this time-consuming issue in sample preparation. [119][120][121][122][123] An even higher degree of automation might be allowed by laser ablation coupled to ICP-MS when an automated sample changer and corresponding soware packages are available.…”

“…Several automated chromatography separation systems have been developed to reduce the personnel workload. In fact, automated methods have long been successfully established and adopted in fields of traditional stable isotope analysis. In recent years, the development and adoption of similar methods for radiogenic and non-traditional stable isotopes have also been developed, where the eluent is controlled by a peristaltic pump or syringe pump. Among these pump-based systems, the commercialized fully automated ion exchange chromatography system prepFAST-MC (ESI, Omaha, NE, USA) has received increasing interest.…”

“…Research has been directed towards miniaturization 16 and automation 19 in hopes of improving the overall efficiency of trace element analysis in actinide matrices while minimizing user interaction. Regarding automation, studies have explored uranium matrix removal 1820 as well as U purification using UTEVA ion exchange resins, 21 but none have explored the Th and Bio-Rad AG MP-1 methodology. Previous studies have shown that efficient separation of thorium from various analytes has been achieved using both anion exchange and extraction chromatography techniques.…”
