Automated Peritoneal Dialysis: Patient Perspectives and Outcomes

Abstract: A steadily increasing number of end stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients are maintained on automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) worldwide, in long-standing as well as in more recently established peritoneal dialysis (PD) programs. A better understanding of the technique, paralleled by progress in involved technology, sustained this growth to the point that APD has become the prevalent mode of PD delivery in most high-income countries. While APD is now regarded to be at least as efficient as continuous ambulator… Show more

“…APD has become the prevalent mode of peritoneal dialysis in most high-income countries. 12 , 13 Previously studies showed that factors such as educational background, occupation, dialysis duration, knowledge of APD, and family support may affect that influence patients’ choosing APD. 5 In this study, we performed a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study to investigate the factors that affect the patients’ choice for APD treatment.…”

“…This may either occur at regular intervals throughout the day, known as Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD), or at night with the assistance of a machine, known as Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD) (10); if initiated, PD has to be continued lifelong or till a renal transplantation is carried out. In APD, the machines can be programmed to deliver precise volumes of PD fluid in multiple cycles throughout the night as the patient sleeps, so that, the patient's daytime routine is unaffected (11).…”
