Automated ‘oscillometric’ blood pressure measuring devices: how they work and what they measure

Abstract: Automated ‘oscillometric’ blood pressure (BP) measuring devices (BPMDs) were developed in the 1970s to replace manual auscultatory BP measurement by mercury sphygmomanometer. Automated BPMDs that have passed accuracy testing versus a reference auscultatory sphygmomanometer using a scientifically accepted validation protocol are recommended for clinical use globally. Currently, there are many thousands of unique automated BPMDs manufactured by hundreds of companies, with each device using proprietary algorithms… Show more

“…Both the XCEL and Mobil-O-Graph methods record cuff BP using a standard, noninvasive automated technique in which BP is estimated using proprietary algorithms during a single cuff inflation and deflation cycle. 32 Immediately after measurement of standard cuff BP, each device reinflates the cuff to record peripheral pressure waveforms and estimate central BP by application of proprietary generalized transfer functions. 33 All BP data were electronically downloaded from the BP monitors.…”

“…Going a step further, blood pressure studies and clinical applications are entering the digital era in patient monitoring through digital devices and wearables. Novel approaches in digital monitoring combine algorithms of high precision and of great value for CVDs chronic patients 322,323 . These algorithms can detect CV risks for hypertensive patients with continuous, noninvasive measurements of blood pressure and are becoming key tools for chronic patient management (Figure 5D).…”

“…Клинических наблюдений, относящихся ко второму типу и опубликованных в литературе, много. Выделяют 2 подтипа: тип IIa, когда ткань присутствует на самой митральной створке [3,4]; и тип IIb, когда ткань имеет прикрепление на субаортальном уровне межжелудочковой перегородки [7,12] или даже аортальном клапане [13,14]. Но не над митральным клапаном, то есть не в предсердии.…”
