Automated Observer-independent Acquisition of Cardiac Short-Axis MR Images: A Pilot Study

Abstract: The authors compared an automated observer-independent acquisition planning method for short-axis multisection multiphase cardiac magnetic resonance imaging studies with conventional manual image planning. Systematic and random differences and reproducibility of left ventricular function measurements and image geometry were evaluated in five healthy adult volunteers and 20 patient studies. Results with the automated planning method were as accurate and reproducible as those with the manual planning method.

“…This analysis was extended in cases where patients presented with irregular cardiac rhythm, since the presence of extra-systoles and other arrhythmias complicated the organized disposition of sections for volumetric quantitation by the Simpson's technique. Our data do not indicate a significant difference between parameters obtained, but this analysis was more prolonged, especially for the patients with irregular cardiac rhythm, in agreement with the current literature (9,(15)(16)(17) . The utilization of a modified BlandAltman graphic plotting for statistical concordance comparison has not demonstrated any significant variation between ventricular systolic function parameters.…”

“…This concept extends previous atlas-based approaches for automated cardiac MR procedures (14,15). Second, trainability of the scan geometry database favorably provides automated atlas generation which is specifically tailored to either the patient population or to institutional or trial-specific preferences.…”

“…The LV long axis is calculated by connecting the LV base center and the apex, which is also used to plan the short-axis stack. The method of fitting a line across centers of all short axis MPRs as shown in [7] and [6] is also applicable. The entire short axis stack can then be planned from base to apex.…”

“…Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows morphological characterization of heart structures with precision. For the past decade, there has been a great deal of efforts focused on automatic cardiac segmentation [5,1,2], however, less attention has been paid to automatic and fast planning for cardiac MRI acquisition [7,8,4,6], which still remains challenging in clinical practice.…”
