Automated Lattice Drawing

Abstract: Abstract. Lattice diagrams, known as Hasse diagrams, have played an ever increasing role in lattice theory and fields that use lattices as a tool. Initially regarded with suspicion, they now play an important role in both pure lattice theory and in data representation. Now that lattices can be created by software, it is important to have software that can automatically draw them. This paper covers:-The role and history of the diagram.-What constitutes a good diagram.-Algorithms to produce good diagrams. Recent… Show more

“…The new algorithm we propose relies upon two techniques. Firstly it makes use of Force Directed Placement (FDP), a well known algorithm in graph drawing [23], which is applied for instance to lattice drawing in [24] [25]. However, in the latter case the lattice is computed first which is against our goal of an incremental display while maintaining a stable mental map.…”

“…Similar to [24], a rank attribute is added to any new photo after it has just been indexed. It is an integer value equal to the number of properties in the object, i.e.…”

“…We also explain how the proposed representation of comtraces can be used to implement efficiently some basic operations on comtraces. Note that our aims are different from those pursued in papers like [5] where the main concern is to develop visually pleasing ways of drawing Hasse diagrams. Here, we are focused on their semantical extensions and effective manipulation.…”

“…However, we wish to briefly present two tools for visualizing small lattices. Ralph Freese, University of Hawaii [4], has created a tool for visualizing small lattices, in which he positions the elements of the lattice by using an analogue positioning method. The method uses tractive and repulsive forces until the lattice has reached a stable condition.…”
