Automated Ki-67 Quantification of Immunohistochemical Staining Image of Human Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Xenografts

Abstract: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is one of the malignant neoplasm with high incidence in China and south-east Asia. Ki-67 protein is strictly associated with cell proliferation and malignant degree. Cells with higher Ki-67 expression are always sensitive to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the assessment of which is beneficial to NPC treatment. It is still challenging to automatically analyze immunohistochemical Ki-67 staining nasopharyngeal carcinoma images due to the uneven color distributions in different cell types.… Show more

“…However, the statistical significance and reliability of the proposed approach on limited number of tissue sample is to be justified. The adequate sample size N could be calculated using paired t ‐test (Shi et al ., ), N=[]()Zα/2+Zβσ/δ2,where, δ is the allowable error limit, which can be set at 5%, σ is the population standard deviation of the difference value in the proposed approach from expert score, Zα/2 is the two‐tailed critical value of normal standard distribution and Zβ is considered regardless of one or two tailed test with α and β are set to 0.05 and 0.1, respectively.…”

“…The overall survival rate of patients with NPC has been increasing; however the prognosis of patients with advanced NPC remains poor and the 5-year survival rate of such patients is only 30–40% ( 6 , 7 ). Tumor recurrence and distant metastasis are the primary factors affecting the prognosis of patients with NPC ( 8 ).…”
