Automated Cobb Angle Measurement for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Using Convolutional Neural Network

Abstract: The Cobb angle measurement of the scoliotic spine is prone to inter- and intra-observer variations in the clinical setting. This paper proposes a deep learning architecture for detecting spine vertebrae from X-ray images to evaluate the Cobb angle automatically. The public AASCE MICCAI 2019 anterior-posterior X-ray image dataset and local images were used to train and test the proposed convolutional neural network architecture. Sixty-eight landmark features of the spine were detected from the input image to ob… Show more

“…When the literature is examined, it can be seen that research works focused on specific solutions for scoliosis. Studies such as [47,56,57,68,73,75] are remarkable as they aimed Cobb angle measurement and comparisons with human-side values. Even, the study [65] performed just angle measurements.…”

“…Participants of both groups received spinal full-length anteroposterior and lateral radiographs (Philips TH-VS Dr) to determine compliance with the inclusion criteria ( Macagno and O’Brien, 2006 ; Enad et al, 2008 ) prior to their participation in the study ( Figure 1 ). The angle between the parallel line of the upper-end plate of T10 and the parallel line of the lower-end plate of L2 is Cobbs’ angle ( Caesarendra et al, 2022 ). The Cobbs’ angle of the thoracolumbar segment on each patient’s lateral radiographs was measured using Surgimap software (Nemaris, Inc.).…”

“…Previous angle assessment models focused on identifying the four corners of each vertebra and using them as landmarks for measuring the Cobb angle or formed bounding boxes around each vertebra. [5,6]. Unlike these previous models, ALEXS generates complete masks for each vertebra, fully outlining its shape.…”
