Autologous Serum and Serum Components

Abstract: Dry eye syndrome is a multifactorial condition on the tear and ocular surface. Autologous serum eye drop is an effective method for treating dry eye. Autologous serum eye drops are now widely used by specialists since a first report in 1975. The results of a systematic study showed that the efficacy of autologous serum eye drops remains ambiguous because its preparation methods and clinical application have not been standardized. To elucidate the efficacy of autologous serum eye drops, well-designed, large-sca… Show more

“…Impaired corneal regeneration remains an unresolved clinical problem in ophthalmology. In addition to lubricants, substances containing growth factors, such as autologous serum and hp-lysate, 42 have been clinically applied. Studies have been performed to standardize the hp-lysate for their active bio-ingredients with some success.…”

“…Studies have been performed to standardize the hp-lysate for their active bio-ingredients with some success. In the present study; we applied a frequently used concentration of 5% v/ v. 42 As a suitable concentration of polyP for the in vitro studies a range around 50 mg ml À1 has been determined. 24 However, the production of such products requires logistical effort and excludes patients with certain infectious diseases.…”

“…Several studies have pointed out the great effectiveness of autologous serum for DED [148][149][150]. Autologous serum is potentially advantageous to treat many dry eye-related ocular surface disorders, such as Sjogren's syndrome, graft-versus-host disease, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and ocular cicatricial pemphigoid.…”
