Autologous Immune Cell-Based Regenerative Therapies to Treat Vasculogenic Erectile Dysfunction: Is the Immuno-Centric Revolution Ready for the Prime Time?

Abstract: About 35% of patients affected by erectile dysfunction (ED) do not respond to oral phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE5i) and more severe vasculogenic refractory ED affects diabetic patients. Innovative approaches, such as regenerative therapies, including stem cell therapy (SCT) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP), are currently under investigation. Recent data point out that the regenerative capacity of stem cells is strongly influenced by local immune responses, with macrophages playing a pivotal role in the inj… Show more

“…The types of stem cells used in ED treatment include autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) and autologous adipose-Information Classification: General derived stem cells (ADSCs). Due to their low immunogenicity, several perinatal tissue-derived cells or bioactive factors, such as hUCBSCs, Wharton's Jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells, placental matrix-derived mesenchymal stem cells (PL-MSCs) [28,46,[52][53][54][55], and acellular solutions from umbilical cord tissue, have also been used as an allogeneic source for ED treatment.…”
