Autologous Fascial Sling vs Polypropylene Tape at Short-Term Followup: A Prospective Randomized Study

Abstract: Rectus fascia sling and TVT seem to be equally effective regarding primary outcome measure (ie cure of stress incontinence). Symptom score related to incontinence surgery as well as simultaneous correction of cystocele are comparable in the 2 groups. Fascial sling is a longer treatment process yet it is more economical. Longer followup is vital before rigorous conclusions can be drawn.

“…There are many studies evaluating TVT and sling methods, but the majority are retrospective observational studies and not randomized controlled trials [18][19][20] . However, there are a few randomized studies comparing TVT with other procedures [21][22][23][24] . AbdelFattah et al [21] have compared TVT with pelvicol pubovaginal sling in 142 patients and reported equal success rates (90%) in the 3-year follow-up for both, but one main criticism of the study was the subjective assessment of the success rate from a questionnaire answered by patients.…”

“…In a study comparing tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) and PVS procedures, Wadie et al [36] reported a 92% success rate in 25 patients who underwent the autologous PVS procedure and a 92.9% success rate in 28 patients who underwent the TVT procedure. They performed prolonged urinary catheterization for one more week in seven patients in the PVS group and in three patients in the TVT group.…”
