Autoimmune Thyroiditis and Generalized Granuloma annulare: Remission of the Skin Lesions after Thyroxine Therapy

Abstract: A patient suffering from generalized granuloma annulare associated with mild hypothyroidism due to an atrophic autoimmune thyroiditis is presented. Treatment with thyroxine resulted in the restauration of a euthyroid state. Subsequently disappearance of the antithyroid antibodies along with a progressive decrease in the number of the skin lesions was noticed. The association between generalized granuloma annulare and autoimmune thyroiditis has been reported once previously in the literature, but it might be of… Show more

“…Our study showed no significant difference between the incidence of diabetes in patients with GA when compared with those receiving treatment for eczema in the same time period. There is a report of GA clearing in patients with hypothyroidism when treated with thyroxine (27), suggesting a possible association between the two conditions. In our study we did observe more cases of hypothyroidism in patients with GA; however, this finding was not shown to be of statistical significance.…”

“…Our patient was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis in 2014; however, she has been euthyroid on levothyroxine since that time. Previous case reports of GA associated with hypothyroidism have shown resolution of the lesions upon treatment with synthetic thyroid hormone [ 3 , 4 ]. Our patient's chronic medical conditions also included fibromyalgia and psoriatic arthritis.…”

“…This disease is a global health problem with a great impact on health services (MEMPEL et al, 2002;VAZQUEZ-LOPEZ et al, 2003). Type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM 1) is characterized by the destruction of pancreatic β-cells that are responsible for insulin production (MEMPEL et al, 2002;WILLEMSEN et al, 1987). These patients possess autoantibodies against insulin, tyrosine phosphatases, islet cells antigens and glutamate decarboxylase that recognize the pancreatic β-cell producing inflammation and causing their destruction (WILLEMSEN et al, 1987;FAYYAZI et al, 2000).…”
