Autoimmune diseases associated with non-Hodgkin lymphoma: a nationwide cohort study

Abstract: Many of 33 studied ADs (except for ankylosing spondylitis, diabetes type I graves/hyperthyroidism, multiple sclerosis, chorea minor, and pernicious anemia), especially when diagnosed at younger ages, were associated with higher risk of NHL. However, the absolute risk of NHL in many ADs is still small.

“…In previous studies reported by Hemminki et al AS patients in Sweden showed an increased risk for multiple myeloma (32), a decreased risk for digestive tract cancer (33), and no altered risk for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (34). In female cancer types of the breast, uterus, ovary and other genital organs, a low SIR in female patients with AS was noted (35).…”

“…Twenty-three patients were documented with NHL resulting in an SIR of 7.1 [ 3 ]. More recently, Fallah et al observed 143 NHL cases after an average 9 years of follow-up of 4,570 SS patients with an SIR of 4.9 [ 32 ]. …”

“…Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma was the main histological subtype ( n = 41 cases), followed by follicular cell ( n = 28), mantle cell ( n = 4), and T-cell and small lymphocytic lymphomas (one each). In addition, this cohort included 15 other unspecifi ed NHL subtypes [ 32 ].…”

“…In addition, the risk of hematological malignancies is also worth noting because many studies have found higher risk of hematological malignancies in patients with specifi c immunemediated diseases (8)(9)(10)(11). Th e data of population-based study of overall and site-specifi c cancer risk in patients with IBD is still scarce and all of them are carried out in Western countries (12)(13)(14)(15).…”
