Autoethnography and Family Research

Abstract: This article describes how autoethnography, a research method that uses—and even foregrounds—personal experience, can be used as a method for studying families. We first define autoethnography, describe orientations to autoethnographic research, and review research that has used autoethnography as a method for studying families. Although autoethnography has numerous strengths, four qualities make it especially suitable for doing family research. We describe how autoethnography can allow researchers to offer in… Show more

“…The methodology I have chosen for my proposed topic is auto-ethnography. Adams and Manning (2015) describe a key belief of auto-ethnography is that culture is interpersonal and circulating through the self; an individual is never existing apart from cultural affects with other human beings. In relation to auto-ethnographic research, they reveal the reality that research cannot be conducted on individuals with neutrality, as people are relational beings and no one can be immune to the influences that relationships have on our experiences in a social world.…”

This method can be used to critique cultural norms, to challenge readers through accessible and affective means, appealing to both lay and academic audiences.…”

“…Most of the decisions in organizations are taken in closed-door meetings due to confidentiality concerns and researchers have fairly limited access to the inner workings of boardrooms (Leblanc & Schwartz, 2007). Autoethnography, wherein the researcher is already an employee who has access to these inside experiences, can address the limitations of other research methods (Adams & Manning, 2015). A researcher who is part of the project has access to these meetings and can guard the confidentiality of the project by disclosing only data relevant to the topic under investigation, the role of 4D visualization for bridging the knowing-doing gap, in this instance.…”
