Autocorrelogram Migration: IVSPWD test

Abstract: We present the results of applying autocorrelogram migration to inverse vertical seismic‐while‐drilling (IVSPWD) profile data collected in the Austin Chalk formation. The seismic reflections were excited by a drill bit moving along a horizontal well at a depth of 2800 m. The data were recorded by a receiver array on the surface. There were 609 twenty‐second traces recorded at each of 10 three‐component stations. After preprocessing, the traces were autocorrelated and migrated. Two imaging conditions were exami… Show more

“…Current interferometric approaches to processing drill-bit noise records rely on correlations ͑e.g., Schuster et al, 2003;Yu et al, 2004͒. “…In most seismic-while-drilling ͑SWD͒ applications ͑e.g., , data acquisition and imaging geometries fall under the category of reverse vertical seismic processing ͑RVSP͒ experiments, in which knowledge of the position of the drill bit is required. With the autocorrelogram migration method, Schuster et al ͑2003͒ andYu et al ͑2004͒ recognize that interferometry could be applied to SWD data without any knowledge of drill-bit position. Poletto and Petronio ͑2006͒ use interferometry to characterize fault zones ahead of a tunnel being drilled.…”

“…Here,¨ (g , g, t) gdir represents, after a Fourier transform in ω, the second time derivative of the crosscorrelation of trace at g with another trace at location g summed over different source positions. If the wavelet power spectrum |W (ω)| 2 is not wideband, then a source power spectrum deconvolution can be implemented prior to processing, as performed by Yu et al (2003).…”
