“…Dean et al 20 found that polymethylmethacrylate discs coated with bone-marrow-impregnated poly (DL-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) foam demonstrated increased bone formation at 3 and 6 weeks, in critical-size defects in the rabbit model, as compared with noncoated preformed polymethylmethacrylate discs. Other authors have investigated the use of bone marrow to enhance revitalization of autoclaved bone grafts 21,22 or hydroxyapatite scaffolds. 23 Based on this, the main objectives of this project were to study the osteoinductive potential of PCL scaffolds in regenerating orbital defects in pigs, and to test that the osteoinductivity could be enhanced by coating of these scaffolds with bone-marrow aspirate.…”

“…The advantages of an autoclaved bone graft are that the graft corresponds to the size and contour of the defect, there is no rejection by the host, and it is easy to obtain as it is the subject's own tissue. The disadvantages of autoclaved bone are that it takes a long time to revascularize and incorporate into bone, and the bone itself is brittle and it becomes mechanically weaker for resorption [13]. Therefore, vascularized fibular grafts were added to the autoclaved autogeneous graft, and excellent results, both oncologically and functionally, were obtained.…”

“…The control group (n=10) and 30 rats which were ovariectomized and treated with daily heparin administration underwent a secondary surgical operation as described by Taguchi et al [18] and Uchida et al [19] Both tibiae of the rats were prepared for surgery as described above and a fracture model was created by drilling a hole in proximal tibial metaphysis.…”
