AutochthonousNocardia cerradoensisInfection in Humans, Spain, 2011 and 2014

Abstract: Nocardia cerradoensis was first isolated in 2003 in the El Cerrado region of Brazil; since then, only 2 human infections, in France and Spain, have been reported. We describe 3 autochthonous cases in residents of Spain during 2011 and 2014. Together these cases support the idea of an emerging global pathogenic microorganism.

“…It is a gram-positive, slightly acid-fast actinomycete originally isolated from soil. Recently, disseminated infection has been described in immunosuppressed people (Piau et al, 2015, Ercibengoa et al, 2016. It was suspected to be opportunistic in this case since the same probes previously failed to detect this organism in four otherwise healthy squirrels that had died due to trauma (personal communication, K. Stevenson).…”

“…Nocardia cerradoensis was initially described in Brazilian soil ( 1 ); as a pathogen it was first noticed causing disseminated infection in a patient who had received a kidney graft ( 2 ). Although N. cerradoensis has been proposed as an emerging global pathogen ( 3 ), no genome of an N. cerradoensis clinical strain has previously been sequenced. Here, we describe the draft genome sequence of N. cerradoensis CNM20130759, isolated from a postinfiltration cutaneous infection on the knee of a 52-year-old immunocompetent woman ( 4 ).…”

“…Nocardia cerradoensis is a newly and rare species identified after 2000, with a clinical preference for skin and soft tissues 14 . Although pulmonary nocardiosis is the most common presentation, CNS can be involved in 44% of cases; being isolated in only 9% of cases 15,16 . In CNS nocardiosis, the disease may be clinically silent, and if symptoms thought to be due to mass lesions rather than infection may be misdiagnosed as a neoplasm initially, especially given the rarity of nocardiosis 1,17 .…”
