“…In Rier’s (2000) case, the data he collected were writings necessary for communication whilst intubated, and recognised as research data only subsequently. This retrospective aspect might lead to Rier’s work being categorised as ‘autobiographical sociology’ (Friedman 1990). In contrast, my own investigation might be better characterised as being ‘opportunistic’ (Riemer 1977) in nature, in the sense that I took advantage of a sociologically rich set of circumstances in which I found myself in order to collect data in a pro‐active fashion.…”

It is not our intention to present an objective, detached "truth" about membership in ICRTs.…”

“…Similarly, and with slight methodological genre-bending for this essay, Friedman (1990) asserts: "In autobiographical sociology a sociologist probes one or more past personal experiences as a way of identifying and analyzing something sociologically relevant" (p. 60). Additionally, Ellis (1993) asserts: "True' stories such as this fit in the space between fiction and social science, joining ethnographic and literary writing, and autobiographical and sociological understanding" (p. 711).…”
