Autoantibodies against small nucleolar ribonucleoprotein complexes and their clinical associations

Abstract: Sera from patients suffering from systemic autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and systemic sclerosis (SSc) have been shown to contain reactivities to nuclear components. Autoantibodies specifically targeting nucleolar antigens are found most frequently in patients suffering from SSc or SSc overlap syndromes. We determined the prevalence and clinical significance of autoantibodies directed to nucleolar RNA-protein complexes, the so-called small nucleolar ribonucleoprotein complexes (… Show more

“…A predominantly nucleolar pattern of ANAs is seen with anti-U3 RNP, anti-PM-Scl, and anti-Th/To antibodies (27,28). Nucleolar staining has been observed in 8-48% of SSc patient sera (6-10), 12-52% of which have been positive for anti-U3 RNP antibodies (6,9,12,13,27,29).…”

“…Although these antibodies are considered specific for scleroderma, antinucleolar antibodies can occur in other autoimmune diseases, such as SLE, PM or dermatomyositis, and RA [17]. The first of the antinucleolar antibodies to be characterized in 1977 were the anti-polymyositis/scleroderma (anti-PM/ Scl) antibodies.…”

“…They are present in a minority of patients with SSc (2-5 %) and seem to characterize a novel subset of patients with limited skin involvement (similar to ACA) but high risk for severe organ involvement and worse prognosis [17,42,60]. Severe pulmonary fibrosis preceding PAH in the same patient as well as renal crisis without interstitial lung disease may be associated with these antibodies [17,60,61].…”
