Auto-calibration based control for independent metering of hydraulic actuators

Abstract: This paper describes a novel auto-calibration state-trajectory-based control method and its application to electronic flow control for independent metering systems. In this paper, the independent metering architecture that is considered uses five Electro-Hydraulic Poppet Valves (EHPV's). The proposed control method is applied to four of these valves, arranged in a Wheatstone bridge configuration, to regulate the flow of hydraulic oil coming into and out of an actuator. For simplicity, the fifth valve is operat… Show more

“…After the manufacturing process for these valves, a deviation in performance can be noticed which affect the IM system overall and to overcome this a calibration algorithm can be used [85]. A novel auto-calibration statetrajectory control method for IM uses a four poppet valve configuration or a Wheatstone bridge [18]. Inserting electronics and sensors to IM valves improves the controllability and overall system performance.…”

“…Possible solutions to replace the traditional 4/3 directional controlled valve used in hydraulic systems to control the motion of an actuator include: (1) Displacement control actuation [11,12], (2) independent metering control [13,14], and (3) digital hydraulics [15][16][17][18]. Each of these solutions has its own strengths and weaknesses.…”
