Authenticity lost? The significance of cultural villages in the conservation of heritage in South Africa

Abstract: Based on a(n) (interrupted) period of 15 years of fieldwork, this study explores the question whether cultural villages in South Africa are to be considered an effective way to conserve a particular cultural heritage in an authentic way. In order to answer this question, three notions of authenticity are juxtaposed with three types of cultural villages. The outcomes reveal a nuanced answer that suggests that some types of cultural villages do contribute to the conservation of an authentic cultural heritage, bu… Show more

“…Recent tourism literature reports the role of tourism in contributing to cultural preservation (Boonzaaier & Wels, 2017;Leong, Takada, & Yamaguchi, 2016). This helps to demonstrate that culture is not fixed but adapts according to circumstances (Shepherd, 2002).…”

“…In addition to this, authenticity is to be assessed in terms of the production cycle of tourism experience: the relationship between tourism developers and tourists at the destination. This suggests that, besides the tourists, the worldviews of the host community, who create and deliver tourism experiences, play an important role in shaping the authenticity of tourist experiences (Boonzaaier & Wels, 2017;Di Domenico & Lynch, 2007;Tiberghien et al, 2017;Tucker & Lynch, 2005;Zhu, 2012). In this stance, authenticity is not simply a matter of perception but also construction; in other words, authentication is a process (Cohen & Cohen, 2012;Xie, 2011).…”

“…Moreover, scholarly attention has been directed towards dissecting the functions and spatial distribution of rural settlements [21]. Recently, a burgeoning interest among scholars globally has been observed in the examination of traditional villages, primarily focusing on the preservation of rural heritage [22][23][24], governance structures [25,26], cultural landscape [13,[27][28][29], tourism [30][31][32], cultural significance [3,33,34], and morphology [35][36][37][38]. Apart from the aforementioned studies, which often focus on micro-and typical cases, some scholars have leveraged geography's macroscopic and integrative nature to explore spatial distribution and influencing factors.…”

“…These cultural villages are purposely built as tourist cultural attractions often presented and packaged as replicas of vernacular architecture complete with the simulacrum of traditional practices and cultures (van Veuren, 2003). Furthermore, the cultural villages have been examined through the lenses of tourist experiences (Marschall, 2003;Mokoena, 2020), the representation of culture and the construction of identities (Ndlovu, 2018), and the debates on authenticity (Boonzaaier & Wels, 2017). This is because the definition of heritage itself has been extended over the years, from tangible to intangible, as a sociocultural process (Smith, 2006), and as a selective process in which we use the past in the present (Ashworth, 2011;Graham, 2002;Lowenthal, 1998).…”
