I examine the art of 17th century wax anatomical models, the preservations of Frederik Ruysch, and Gunther von Hagens' Body Worlds plastinates, giving consideration to authenticity of both body and art. “…The collection that was shipped to Saint Petersburg consisted of twelve subsequently composed cabinets, comprising human, animal and plant specimens which were described by Ruysch in Latin and issued as illustrated catalogues and collectively re‐issued in 1721 (Ruysch, 1721), and posthumously translated in Dutch (Ruysch, 1744). “…McLeary and Toon2 are critical of the claim that ‘anatomical revelation’ is an effective mode of health education and there is a growing discourse of criticism surrounding novel displays of anatomy 85. Instead, we could argue that health education today demands an anatomical narration in which the machine body has to both function and malfunction .…”

“…Representations of the nude body in sculptures or paintings provide students with the opportunity to identify surface anatomy features, particularly of the musculoskeletal system, that are portrayed in the artworks. The anatomy depicted in represented bodies is fictive, however, even if the artist's intent is to create “realistic” portrayals of the body (Gombrich, 2000; Summers, 2003; Adkins, 2017). Therefore, analyzing fictive anatomy would enable students to apply their knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy to identify represented structures, and then to evaluate the anatomical fidelity of those depicted structures.…”
