Australian Panopinae (Diptera: Acroceridae)

Abstract: The subfamily Panopinae in Australia is revised, the historical aspect of early collections discussed and certain taxonomic changes proposed. Four genera and ten species are recognized, of which the genus Mesophysa Macquart is revived and one genus, Panocalda, and five species, Panocalda grossi. Panops austrae. Mesophysa ilsei. M . tenaria and M . ultima, are described as new. Neotypes are selected for two species, Panops baudini Lamarck and PanopsJavipes Latreille, of which the types have been lost. Panops Ja… Show more

“…A lineage consisting of the South African genus Psilodera and the cosmopolitan Pterodontia was recovered as sister to the rest of the subfamily. Based on morphology, Pterodontia has been alternatively placed in Panopinae (Schiner, ; Brunetti, ; Schlinger, , ; Nartshuk, ) or in Cyrtinae (=Acrocerinae sensu Schlinger) (Cole, ; Pleske, ; Neboiss, ; Nartshuk, ; Winterton et al ., ). Psilodera has usually been associated with the Cyrtinae (Schlinger, ; Winterton et al ., ), although in body shape and wing venation it looks more typical of a panopine.…”

“…The body colouration, darkening of the costal wing margin and abdominal waist allows members of this genus to be convincing wasp mimics (Neboiss 1971). Leucopsina can be differentiated from all other acrocerid genera by the wasp mimicking habitus, elongate cylindrical flagellum, apilose eyes and elongate mouthparts.…”
