Augmented Reality in Breast Surgery Education

Abstract: Introduction: Augmented Reality (AR) has demonstrated a potentially wide range of benefits and educational applications in the virtual health ecosystem. The concept of real-time data acquisition, machine learning aided processing, and visualization, is a foreseen ambition to leverage AR applications in the healthcare sector. This breakthrough with immersive technologies like AR, mixed reality (MR), virtual reality (VR), or extended reality (XR) will hopefully initiate a new surgical era: that of the use of the… Show more

“…Although promising research has been published, AR applications in breast surgery are still evolving, and the technology’s maturity needs to be carefully assessed for clinical adoption. Also, AR systems used in medical settings must undergo rigorous certification processes to ensure compliance with medical device regulations ( 103 , 104 ). Limitations of AR localization include lack of interoperability between healthcare systems, video flickering problem intraoperatively ( 103 ).…”

“…Real-time data collecting, ML-aided processing, and visualization are anticipated goals for using AR technologies in the healthcare sector. The study in [26] focuses on the potential future application of AR in breast surgery education, describing two prospective applications (surgical remote telementoring and impalpable breast cancer localization using AR) as well as the technical requirements to make it viable.…”

“…Access is provided not only to content, such as articles, research papers, and videos, but also webinars and live-streamed procedures that facilitate education and promote new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies [12]. Telementoring and surgery through the use of artificial intelligence are closer than ever [13].…”
