This study collected literature on augmented reality (AR) from academic and patent databases to plot the historic development trajectory of AR and forecast its future research and development trends. A total of 3193 and 13,629 papers were collected from academic and patent databases, respectively. First, a network was established using references from the academic literature; main path analysis was conducted on this reference network to plot the overall development trajectory. Subsequent cluster and word cloud analyses revealed the following five major groups of AR research topics: AR surgical navigation applications, AR education applications, AR applications in manufacturing, AR applications in architecture, and AR applications in visual tracking. Subsequently, the relationships between the overall development trajectory and the five AR research topics were compared. Next, the title and abstract of AR-related academic and patent papers were subjected to text mining to identify keywords with a high frequency of occurrence. The results can provide a reference for industry, government, and academia when planning future development strategies for the AR field. This research adopted an integrated analysis procedure to plot the trajectory of AR technology development and applications successfully and effectively, predict future patent research and development directions and produce technological forecasts.

Virtual Reality (VR) is being integrated into many different areas of our lives, from industrial engineering to video-games, and also including teaching and education. We have several examples where VR has been used to engage students and facilitate their 3D spatial understanding, but can VR help also teachers? What are the benefits teachers can obtain on using VR applications? In this paper we present an application (VR4Health) designed to allow students to directly inspect 3D models of several human organs by using Virtual Reality systems. The application is designed to be used in an HMD device autonomously as a self-learning tool and also reports information to teachers in order that he/she becomes aware of what the students do and can redirect his/her work to the concrete necessities of the student. We evaluate both the students' and the teachers' perception by doing an experiment and asking them to fill-in a questionnaire at the end of the experiment.

RESUMENLa reciente implantación de las tecnologías portátiles digitales en la sociedad, y especialmente entre los jóvenes, supone un desafío para los docentes, y podría ser una oportunidad para obtener un mayor aprovechamiento acadé-mico. Este artículo presenta una investigación sobre el uso educativo de aplicaciones de Geolocalización y Realidad Aumentada con dispositivos digitales móviles en niveles de Enseñanza Secundaria, Bachillerato y Formación Profesional. Se trata de una investigación para averiguar si es posible emplear estos recursos en los dispositivos móviles del alumnado para obtener un beneficio y mejora educativa. El trabajo se inicia con una revisión de estos desarrollos tecnológicos desde una dimensión formativa. A continuación se realiza un macro estudio descriptivo y cuantitativo entre 1832 alumnos en el que analizamos el tipo de dispositivos que poseen; para posteriormente analizar la opinión del profesorado sobre la funcionalidad y utilidad didáctica de estos desarrollos. Los resultados clarifican la tipología y penetración de los dispositivos entre los tres niveles educativos analizados, y los datos apuntan la posibilidad de implementar estas tecnologías ya que sus equipos disponen de sistemas operativos avanzados y hardware GPS apropiado.
