Este trabajo presenta las posibilidades didácticas de la herramienta de realidad aumentada ZapWorks en la enseñanza de las ciencias a través de una experiencia desarrollada con 57 estudiantes (hombres y mujeres) del Máster Universitario en Profesorado de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria, Bachillerato, Formación Profesional y Enseñanza de Idiomas de la Universidad de Málaga (especialidades de Física y Química y de Biología y Geología). La experiencia se desarrolló en dos sesiones de dos horas de duración cada una. En la primera sesión, los estudiantes recibieron una instrucción sobre realidad aumentada y sus posibilidades educativas, y desde el punto de vista procedimental, tuvieron la oportunidad de utilizar la herramienta ZapWorks y la aplicación Zappar para el abordaje de contenidos científicos a través de escenarios amplificados. Tras esta sesión, los estudiantes, trabajando por parejas, dispusieron de una semana para diseñar una actividad con dicha herramienta y elaborar una memoria explicativa. La segunda sesión consistió en la explicación oral en el aula de la propuesta realizada. Como instrumentos para la recogida de datos se utilizaron la memoria escrita y un cuestionario administrado al finalizar la experiencia para conocer las percepciones de los estudiantes en torno al uso y a las posibilidades didácticas de la tecnología de realidad aumentada, en general, y de la herramienta ZapWorks, en particular. Los resultados ponen de manifiesto que la mayoría de los estudiantes tienen una actitud positiva y reflexiva ante las potencialidades educativas de la realidad aumentada y de la herramienta ZapWorks, en concreto, como estrategia metodológica para facilitar los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje de contenidos científicos.

Cooking at home is a critical survival skill. We propose a new cooking assistance system in which a user only needs to wear an all-in-one augmented reality (AR) headset without having to install any external sensors or devices in the kitchen. Utilizing the built-in camera and cutting-edge computer vision (CV) technology, the user can direct the AR headset to recognize available food ingredients by simply looking at them. Based on the types of the recognized food ingredients, suitable recipes are suggested accordingly. A step-by-step video tutorial providing details of the selected recipe is then displayed with the AR glasses. The user can conveniently interact with the proposed system using eight kinds of natural hand gestures without needing to touch any devices throughout the entire cooking process. Compared with the deep learning models ResNet and ResNeXt, experimental results show that the YOLOv5 achieves lower accuracy for ingredient recognition, but it can locate and classify multiple ingredients in one shot and make the scanning process easier for users. Twenty participants test the prototype system and provide feedback via two questionnaires. Based on the analysis results, 19 of the 20 participants would recommend others to use the proposed system, and all participants are overall satisfied with the prototype system.

Recent years have witnessed an increasing interest in deploying state-of-the-art augmented reality (AR) head-mounted displays (HMDs) for agri-food applications. The benefits of AR HMDs to agri-food industry stakeholders (e.g., food suppliers, retail/food service) have received growing attention and recognition. AR HMDs enable users to make healthier dietary choices, experience novel changes in their perception of taste, enhance the cooking and food shopping experience, improve productivity at work and enhance the implementation of precision farming. Therefore, although development costs are still high, the case for integration of AR in food chains appears to be compelling. This review will present the most recent developments of AR HMDs for agri-food relevant applications. The summarized applications can be clustered into different themes: (1) dietary and food nutrition assessment; (2) food sensory science; (3) changing the eating environment; (4) retail food chain applications; (5) enhancing the cooking experience; (6) food-related training and learning; and (7) food production and precision farming. Limitations of current practices will be highlighted, along with some proposed applications.
