Augmentative effects of L‐cysteine and methylmethionine sulfonium chloride on mucin secretion in rabbit gastric mucous cells

Abstract: The present findings indicate that the increase in mucin secretion by Cys and MMSC was not mediated through the cAMP or Ca2+ signal transduction pathway, but might occur through non-receptor-mediated mechanisms.

“…Treatment with anti-epileptic drugs, especially VPA, is generally long-term and associated with significant side effects including renal damage (Watanabe et al 2005;Dhillon and Högler 2011). Due to the antioxidant property of vit U (Watanabe et al 2000), we have proposed that it may be used as a protective agent against VPA-induced oxidative stress-related inflammation and fibrosis which have important roles in development of renal toxicity. Accumulating evidence clearly indicates that prolonged use of VPA caused nephrotoxicity in animal models (Raza et al 2000;Chaudhary et al 2014) and also in humans (Watanabe et al 2005;Dhillon and Högler 2011).…”

“…Vit U intermediates many biosynthetic pathways including the inhibition of free radical production, gastric motility disorder, vasolateral pressure, and direct cellular damage through sulfonium functional group (Watanabe et al 2000). It has been reported as effective for treatment of gastric mucosal damage induced by ethanol in rats (Watanabe et al 2000).…”

“…SMM, considered as a sulfur compound, has various biological properties such as suppression of gastric disorder, trapping reactive oxygen species, and protection of a blood‐vessel (Takeuchi and others ; Hiraishi and others ; Watanabe and others ; Shin and others ; Son and Shim ). The effect of SMM with various dosages of gastric disease has been conducted by in vivo study (Watanabe and Others ; Kopinski and others ; Ichikawa and others ; Shim and Lim ).…”

“…The purpose of the present study was to use biochemical and histological methods to determine the effects of 7‐day co‐administration of methylmethionine sulfonium chloride (MMSC) and famotidine on gastric mucus cells in the rat. MMSC is a gastroprotective drug that promotes ulcer healing by acting on the gastric mucosa without affecting acid secretion 12–15 …”
