Augmentation of implant surfaces with BMP-2 in a revision setting

Abstract: Aims We wanted to evaluate the effects of a bone anabolic agent (bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2)) on an anti-catabolic background (systemic or local zoledronate) on fixation of allografted revision implants. Methods An established allografted revision protocol was implemented bilaterally into the stifle joints of 24 canines. At revision surgery, each animal received one BMP-2 (5 µg) functionalized implant, and one raw implant. One group (12 animals) received bone graft impregnated with zoledronate (0.005 … Show more

“…Establishing the best surgical option in treating musculoskeletal neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions is ongoing. [17][18][19][20][21][22][23] Our comparison of rAPC reconstruction with osteoarticular allograft reconstruction in treating distal femoral tumours in children revealed knee stability and functional outcomes were statistically significantly better in the rAPC group, while the ROM in the knee was statistically significantly better in the osteoarticular allograft group. These findings were clinically relevant.…”

“…Microstructure is an important component of bone quality, and its integrity contributes to the maintenance of bone strength ( 12 , 41 ). The microarchitectural patterns in different regions of the joint may differ ( 42 ), reflecting different types and levels of biomechanical loads ( 43 , 44 ). The primary compressive trabeculae, which have a compact microarchitecture and great biomechanical strength, bear the majority of stress on the femoral head during daily activities ( 45 ).…”

“…В этом плане некоторые исследования показывают, например, что в клинической практике неудачи при использовании алломатериалов вызваны быстрой и полной деградацией материала [40]. В этом направлении имеется целая серия исследований, в которых золедронаты используются в качестве модификаторов, препятствующих избыточной резорбции костнопластического материала, содержащего стимуляторы остеогенеза (как правило, это факторы роста) [41,42].…”
