Augmentation of an Engineered Bacterial Strain Potentially Improves the Cleanup of PCB Water Pollution

Abstract: PCB cleanup technique in a natural environment relies on the use of enzymes from microorganisms, primarily biphenyl dioxygenase and dehalogenase. Herein, we focused on biphenyl dioxygenase and created a recombinant PCB-degrading E. coli strain.

“…Comamonas played a dominant role in tetracycline hydrochloride degradation and power generation in a microbial fuel cell (Zhang et al, 2021 ). Comamonas testosteroni YAZ2 could be used for the cleanup of polychlorinated biphenyl water pollution (Hara et al, 2021 ). The laccase enzymatic traits and delignification procedures of rice straw by Comamonas testosteroni FJ17 were investigated (Wang et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Quorum sensing mediated formation of biofilm has been also shown to degrade POPs via solubilization and biotransformation [87]. Recently, bioaugmentation is found to be effective in treating PCB-contaminated water using transformed Comamonas testosteroni and Escherichia coli strains [88]. Microorganisms are now looked at as a plausible solution for treating pristine marine ecosystems and other anthropogenic halogenated contaminants, as well as the rich source of secondary metabolites [89].…”
