Augmentation cystoplasty: Urodynamic and metabolic outcomes at 10‐year follow‐up

Abstract: The present study confirms the effectiveness of augmentation cystoplasty in increasing bladder capacity, improving bladder compliance and reducing detrusor overactivity. The preservation of renal function and low metabolic complication rate provide solid evidence for carrying out this time-honored procedure in patients with neurogenic or non-neurogenic bladder dysfunction.

“…Urinary tract stone formation is a common complication after AE because increased calcium excretion and the ineffective emptying of the augmented bladder leads to urinary stasis. The presence of urease producing bacteriuria and mucus production from bowel mucosa could certainly be other contributing factors . SCI patients who are wheel chair bounded are prone to have calcium stones due to immobilization.…”

“…The presence of urease producing bacteriuria and mucus production from bowel mucosa could certainly be other contributing factors. 21 SCI patients who are wheel chair bounded are prone to have calcium stones due to immobilization. Therefore, annual physical check-ups and imaging studies are needed for the early detection of urinary stones in such patients.…”

“…Recurrent urinary tract infection can occur posttransplant in children with an augmentation cystoplasty. 21 It can also increase the risk of deterioration of renal graft function. Clean intermittent catheterization and antibiotic prophylaxis are important treatments to prevent urinary tract infection.…”

“…[21][22][23] Most patients who have augmentation cystoplasty require bicarbonate, resulting in a longer follow-up. 21 Chronic metabolic acidosis could lead to depletion of calcium carbonate from bone, which may cause growth retardation in children. 21 There is no significant increased risk of bladder cancer after bladder augmentation for a dysfunctional bladder.…”
