Auditory-Visual Integration for Speech by Children With and Without Specific Language Impairment

Abstract: Responses by the children with SLI indicated less impact of visual processing on speech perception than was seen with their normal peers. These results demonstrate that the difficulties with speech perception by SLI children extend beyond the auditory-only modality to include auditory-visual processing as well.

“…To sum up, the less accurate recognition of visual speech can explain the weaker McGurk effect in the children with developmental language disorders, as well as the lack of impact of SNR on their pattern of auditory and visual responses. This conclusion is in agreement with Norrix et al (2007) and Leybaert and Colin (2008). …”

“…A few studies examined this question. It appeared that visual articulatory cues influenced adults and children with language impairment to a lesser extend than participants with TLD (Ramirez and Mann, 2005; Norrix et al, 2007; Leybaert and Colin, 2008; Meronen et al, 2013). Ramirez and Mann (2005) compared adults with dyslexia and with auditory neuropathy (AN) to adults with TLD.…”

“…The neuromagnetic activations in the left posterior temporal and inferior frontal regions were considered to be localized to Wernicke's and Broca's areas, respectively. Neuromagnetic activations in the language cortices have been studied in previous reports [11]. The language areas identified in the present study are in agreement with these previous reports.…”

“…On the one hand children with SLI spend more time fi xating the speaking mouth than typical controls, possibly to compensate for auditory processing defi cits (Hosozawa, Tanaka, Shimizu, Nakano, & Kitazawa, 2012). But on the other, the use of visual cues during audiovisual speech integration is known to be less effi cient in children and adults with language-learning disabilities (Norrix, Plante, & Vance, 2006;Norrix, Plante, Vance, & Boliek, 2007). Several behavioural studies used the McGurk paradigm to investigate atypical development.…”
