Auditory function and quality of life in patients receiving cisplatin chemotherapy in head and neck cancer

Abstract: The studies have shown hearing loss in higher frequencies, but in our study, we have observed hearing loss at speech frequency in 22.2% of patients receiving cisplatin, who also had low serum albumin levels. Periodic audiometric monitoring and serum albumin level may be helpful to provide timely intervention to prevent further hearing loss and deterioration in the quality of life.

“…It is common for there to be a reduction in QoL following the first three cycles of platinum-based chemotherapy in adults (Kalyanam et al 2018). Furthermore, it is well documented that hearing loss negatively impacts mental wellbeing and QoL, although the use of hearing aids appear to improve general QoL within the first year, emphasising the importance of early and proper diagnosistics (Hogan et al 2015;Fellinger et al 2007).…”

“…Ototoxicity is a side effect of cisplatin treatment characterized by bilateral, gradual, and severe hearing loss, with a prevalence of 40–80% in adult cancer patients and >50% in pediatric cancer patients 1. This ototoxicity can lead to a multifaceted decrease in the quality of life and notably impact the social and academic development of pediatric patients 24. Numerous protective compounds have been identified in preclinical studies and several are undergoing clinical trials 5,6.…”

“…Hearing loss can also contribute to difficulties in comprehension of health‐related communication and act as a barrier to supportive care and counseling of affected individuals 29 . Therefore, loss of hearing function, especially irreversible SNHL for which there is a lack of effective treatment, 29 can have long‐standing and devastating physical, functional, cognitive, social, emotional, and financial consequences along with the life of OPC survivors 30 …”
