Auditory and Cognitive Attributes of Hearing Aid Acclimatization in Individuals With Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Abstract: Purpose The study aimed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of perceived benefit of hearing aid acclimatization. Specifically, measures in the auditory and cognitive domain were tapped to investigate its relationship with the perceived benefit. Method Twenty-six individuals with sensorineural hearing loss served as participants for the study. The perceived benefit of hearing aid use was assessed using the Speech, Spatial and Qualitie… Show more

“…Out of the 48 included papers, 13 of them compared effort questionnaires to behavioural measures of LE (Desjardins, 2016; Johnson et al, 2015; Megha & Maruthy, 2019; Perreau et al, 2017; Picou et al, 2017; Picou & Ricketts, 2018; Rovetti et al, 2019; Seeman & Sims, 2015; Strand et al, 2018; Visentin et al, 2019, 2021; Visentin & Prodi, 2021; White & Langdon, 2021). These papers produced 28 distinct correlational analyses.…”

“…Shetty and Nanjundaswamy [32] evaluated the effect of noise reduction strategies in hearing aids on annoyance and speech perception in individuals with hearing loss. Megha and Maruthy [33] have also used the sentences to assess the perceived benefit of hearing aid acclimatization; Shetty and Pottackal [34] have quantified the amount of gain variation in a hearing aid required to cause a change in the tinnitus percept.…”

“…The most difficult environments and the lowest scores were noted when speech was presented in a background noise condition compared to quiet or music conditions. Therefore, although HAs have been shown to improve cognitive and cortical function ( Karawani et al, 2018b ; Glick and Sharma, 2020 ; Karawani et al, 2022 ), and perceptual abilities ( Munro and Lutman, 2003 ; Lavie et al, 2015 ; Megha and Maruthy, 2019 ; Wright and Gagné, 2020 ), the benefits of speech in noise processing are limited ( Sweetow and Sabes, 2006 ; Humes et al, 2009 , 2013 ; Kaplan-Neeman et al, 2012 ; Karawani et al, 2018a ; Bieber and Gordon-Salant, 2021 ).…”
