Audit of EEG Reporting Temporal Abnormalities

Abstract: The electroencephalogram (EEG) is a valuable neurodiagnostic tool in the evaluation of patients suspected of having epilepsy. A normal EEG does not necessarily exclude epilepsy but the detection of epileptiform abnormalities (such as spikes, sharp waves and spike-slow-wave discharges) indicates a seizure tendency which may support the clinical diagnosis of epilepsy and provide additional information regarding seizure type and focus.Unfortunately, there is often considerable diversity among clinicians in the in… Show more

“…These values are comparable to other studies of inter-rater variability in the EEG literature Nguyen et al (2010). reported kappa of 0.58-0.63 between two experienced epileptologists from the same institution when evaluating for the presence of temporal epileptiform discharges in the adult scalp EEG Piccinelli et al (2005).…”

“…The reliability of the electroencephalogram report from a neurophysiology service is of importance for the patient and clinician but there is no criterion standard for training and interpretation of electroencephalogram studies. 21 The majority of our patients were referred by the medical outpatient department, staffed by medical officers with pediatric experience but who are not necessarily qualified pediatricians.…”

“…Ihre Bedeutung für die Epilepsiediagnostik rührt daher, dass sie fälsch-licherweise als ETP interpretiert und damit zur Diagnosestellung einer Epilepsie herangezogen werden [14]. Dies wird dadurch begünstigt, dass sie auch isoliert sowie als Fragmente eines Rhythmus auftreten können.…”
