Adolescence is a critical developmental stage. Blind adolescent girls are a group of disabled girls who needs a special care specifically during the menstruation.The study aimed to examine the effect of audio-drama nursing intervention utilizingpeer education on menstrual hygiene and sickness management among blind adolescents. Design: Quasi-experimental design (pre and posttest) was used to accomplish the present study. Setting: Al Noor institute for visually impaired students at Shebein El-kom City in Menoufia Governorate, Egypt. Subjects: A Convenient sample of 40 blind girls aged between (12-18years) was recruited in this study. Tools: four instruments were used for data collection; I: Structured interviewing questionnaire which consist of two parts; first part:Socio-demographic data; second part: Menstrual data. II: An interviewing questionnaire on knowledge about menstruation; Knowledge about menstrual hygiene questionnaire; andKnowledge about management of menstrual sickness questionnaire. III: Non -observational checklist on practice of menstrual hygiene and management of menstrual sickness. IV: An interviewing questionnaire on satisfaction level. Results: There were lack knowledge and practices regarding menstruation before implementing the audio drama nursing intervention using peer education sessions. Also, there were an improvement and highly statistically significant differences in the totalscores of knowledge and practices of blind adolescent girls regarding menstruation after provision of the audio drama nursing intervention using peer education (P<0.001). Conclusion:The audio drama nursing intervention using peer education were effective in the improvement of the blind adolescent girls' knowledge and practices regarding menstrual hygiene and menstrual sickness management. Recommendation: Continues health education programs should be applied to raise the awareness of blind adolescent girls regarding menstruation in different setting.

This chapter presents the concept of Gaze-Led Audio Description (GLAD) and its application for the accessibility of city space. Audio Description (AD) is created by domain experts who have deep knowledge of the audio-described matter but might have their own narrative biases. Many studies report that experts’ perception and attentional patterns over the objects of their expertise are different from the perception of non-experts. As an unintended result, audio descriptions of architectural heritage created by experts, art historians or architects, might lose accessibility to non-experts. For example, often experts’ views of historic buildings are based on reading diagrams of historic buildings, leading the description from a general presentation of the basic divisions of architectural structures. The descriptions then focus on the details leading from the lower to the upper parts. This type of audio description is useful in the analysis of monuments; however, it may not reflect the natural way of looking, which usually focuses initially on the dominant accent of the mass. In this chapter, we postulate that AD may benefit from adjusting it regarding the analysis of visual attention patterns of non-experts. We present some insights from empirical research.

Universal and ecological design in media accessibility: finding common ground

This article cross-checks universal design and ecological design in the context of media accessibility (with an emphasis on audio description, captions, audio subtitling, sign language interpreting, touch tours), aiming to identify practices that adhere to both design approaches. Following a literature review, a theoretical commentary is presented. Therein, each of the seven universal design principles (Connell et al. in The principles of universal design, 1997. https://projects.ncsu.edu/design/cud/about_ud/udprinciplestext.htm) is assessed in the light of ecological design. Three different outcomes are found when connecting universal design and ecological design principles: (1) certain universal design principles overlap with ecological design principles; (2) others are divergent with ecological design principles and (3) some are complementary, that is, they are unrelated but may be reconcilable. Universal design principles one and two (equitable use and flexibility in use) are harmonious with principles of ecological design in several ways. Principles three (simple and intuitive use), four (perceptible information) and seven (appropriate size and space) remain seemingly unrelated to ecological design principles, though they could be reconciled if certain changes were undertaken. Principles five (low physical effort) and six (appropriate size and space for approach and use) of universal design could be antagonistic with ecological design in some regards.
