Abstract

The first three papers i n this issue are reprinted from the May, 1956, issue of the Proceedings of the IRE, Az&dia. The papers by Ronald D. Stewart and Arthur h~IcLeai1 were first presented a t a general meeting of the Sydney Division of the Institution o f Radio Engineers Australia on April 29, 1954. The paper by Fritz Langford-Smith was delivered on September 29, 195-1. These papers are reprinted here as a general service for the pLirpose of acquainting the readers of the IRE '~RANSACTIONS ON AUDIO with thoughts 011 audio subjects prevalent in other areas of the world.-The Editor I I Summary-The quality of home reproduction of sound is strongly dependent upon psychological considerations and the characteristics of the room. To evaluate improved methods of home reproduction it i s necessary to check system performance by carefully controlled listener tests. The results obtained from such tests indicate that wide-range reproduction is only acceptable when distortion is kept t o an extremely low level.
