The present study is focused on tubular multi-channel arrays composed of commercial fluoropolymer (FEP) tubes with different wall thickness. After proper charging in a high electric field, such tubular structures exhibit a large piezoelectric coefficient significantly exceeding the values of classical polymer ferroelectrics and being even comparable to conventional lead-free piezoceramics. The quasistatic piezoelectric coefficient was theoretically derived and its upper limits were evaluated considering charging and mechanical properties of the arrays. In order to optimize the coefficient the remanent polarization and the mechanical properties were taken into account, both being strongly dependent on the air channel geometry as well as on the wall thickness of the FEP tubes. The model predictions are compared with experimental d33 coefficients for two particular arrays with equal air gaps of 250 μm, but with different wall thickness of utilized FEP tubes of 50 μm and 120 μm, respectively. Analytical modeling allows for the prediction that arrays made of FEP tubes with a wall thickness of 10 μm are foreseen to exhibit a superb piezoelectric response of up to 600 pC/N if the height of stadium-like shaped air channels is reduced down to 50 μm, making them potentially interesting for application as highly sensitive sensors and energy harvesting.

Harvesting energy from the environment is a sustainable solution for powering decentralized sensor networks, Internet of Things systems, etc. In this work, a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) based on the fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) electret film is investigated to generate electricity from mechanical motions in the environment, and its working principle is explained with a variable capacitance model. For the first time, the validity of this model is verified with a capacitor discharge curve fitting method. Based on this model, the maximum output energy of the TENG per working cycle is calculated, which could be useful for comparing the property of TENGs working under different environmental conditions. An adhesive tape-peeling process is innovatively used to charge the FEP electret film, which is facile and effective for increasing the charge amount on the film without using any complex equipment. Through this method, the surface potential of a 4 cm × 4 cm FEP film is improved from-360V to 2-2850V, the output negative voltage peak of the same-sized TENG is improved from-83 V to-363 V, and for a wind-driven 8 cm × 8 cm sized TENG, its average output power to charge a 10 μF capacitor is improved from 2.5 μW to 19.8 μW. The ability of this TENG in generating electricity from low-frequency human motions to directly light up light emitting diodes (LEDs) is also demonstrated.

Polymer electrets have revealed great potential application in electromechanical devices because of the low weight, large quasi‐piezoelectric sensitivity, and excellent flexibility. For an electret, a permanent and macroscopic electric field exists on the surface, principally led by a macroscopic electrostatic charge on the surface or a net orientation of polar groups inside the object. Here, progress in the development of polymer electrets is reviewed. After a brief retrospect of the research courses and those typical polymer electrets that are classified into fluorine polymer and nonfluorine polymer, we present a survey on the charging methods, including corona, soft X‐ray, contact, thermal and monoenergetic particle beams. The latest representative applications (i.e., power harvesting, sensors, field effect transistors, and biomedicine) based on polymer electrets are also summarized. Finally, we complete this review with a discussion on perspectives and challenges in this field.
