Audience spontaneous entrainment during the collective enjoyment of live performances: physiological and behavioral measurements

Abstract: cardiac synchrony is a crucial component of shared experiences, considered as an objective measure of emotional processes accompanying empathic interactions. no study has investigated whether cardiac synchrony among people engaged in collective situations links to the individual emotional evaluation of the shared experience. We investigated theatrical live performances as collective experiences evoking strong emotional engagement in the audience. Cross Recurrence Quantification Analysis was applied to obtain t… Show more

“…Even in the context of music, theater, or film, the emphasis is on the concurrent and shared experience of an audience that synchronizes heart rate to oneanother. 38,39,56,57 Here we have emphasized instead that it is the stimulus that synchronizes HR, or more precisely, a similar processing of a common stimulus. There is no need for individuals to directly interact, be related to one another or perceive the stimulus together at the same time.…”

“…There are many studies reporting a correlation of physiological signals across subjects. 37 Generally this has been linked to physical or social interaction, [38][39][40] or at the very least a copresence at the same place and time. 41 However, consistent with our hypothesis, the simultaneous experience is not crucial for synchronization.…”

“…Although brain imaging techniques can implicitly measure naturalistic musical perception without behavioural ratings [1][2][3][4][5] , these methods lack applicability in more typical listening situations, particularly those where listening happens in a group, such as in a concert. Not only does a concert provide a naturalistic setting, but live performances can be more immersive 6 , evoke stronger emotional responses [7][8][9] , while copresence of audience members can increase physiological and emotional experience 10 .…”

“…Portable methods such as motion capture 11 or mobile measurement of the autonomic nervous system (ANS, e.g., cardiology) 10,12 seem promising in such a setting. As our interest lay in the experience of a Western art music concert, in which listeners are typically still 13 , we focused on ANS measurements during listening of full-length musical works in a naturalistic concert context.…”
