“Audience exchange”: cultivating peer-to-peer dialogue at unfamiliar arts events

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of the “audience exchange” approach for audience development and research, and to highlight the insights offered by peer-to-peer dialogue in understanding experiences of unfamiliar arts. Design/methodology/approach Using a case study with contemporary arts audiences, and setting this in the wider context of studies with other first-time attenders at a range of arts events, the paper explores the use of the “audience exchange” method, in which… Show more

“…However, as widely discussed, value can also be seen as a socio-cultural concept, as it generates the norms and conventions followed and created in social interactions (see, e.g. Pitts and Gross, 2017). (Scott, 1987;diMaggio and Powell, 1983;Kiitsak-Prikk, 2017; Jyr€ am€ a and € Ayv€ ari, 2010) Acknowledging the socio-cultural concept elaborates on the analysis framework by focusing the third essential contextual level, environment, as M€ oller and Halinen state in their conceptual article (2017; see also Colbert, 2007).…”

“…Bonet and N egrier (2018) further exemplify that technological, societal and political trends have strongly influenced our understanding of participation in the arts. The studies on the role of customers (Bonet and N egrier, 2018) or artists (Cluley, 2013) in the co-creation of value, analysed as participants or prosumers or through engagement in digital platforms (Walmsley, 2016; see also Pitts and Burland, 2013;Pitts and Gross, 2017), highlight the need to critically reflect the phenomenon and its conceptualisations from various perspectives. In addition, as Walmsley (2016) mentions, research considering the perspectives of customer relation management is scant.…”

“…Ethnoconsumerism "studies actions, thoughts, language, institutions, and their interconnections between the categories" (Venkatesh 1995, 27-8), allowing researchers to go beyond an emic perspective to develop deeper engagement. Pitts and Gross (2017) used the 'audience exchange' approach to create interactional understanding via dialogue. On a more bodily level, Bode and Chauvin (2015) have used music, Bode (2010) proposed a performance-oriented research, and Vincs (2007) engaged in dance.…”

“…For example, arts organizations have been experimenting with post-performance lectures and discussions to connect audiences and performers. These interventions are usually dominated by experts to give the audience 'expert' insights (Heim, 2012;Pitts and Gross, 2017). An unintended side-effect of this approach may be that these interventions reinforce the idea that there is such a thing as a proper mode of consumption for a specific cultural product (cf.…”
