Atypical presentations and rare metastatic sites of renal cell carcinoma: a review of case reports

Abstract: Renal cell carcinoma is a potentially lethal cancer with aggressive behavior and a propensity for metastatic spread. Due to the fact that the patterns of metastases from renal cell carcinomas are not clearly defined, there have been several reports of cases of renal cell carcinoma associated with rare metastatic sites and atypical presenting symptoms. The present review focuses on these atypical rare clinical presentations of renal cell carcinomas both at the time of diagnosis of the primary tumor but also in … Show more

“…This is most likely attributable to the relatively aggressive nature of RCC, with its tendency to metastasize [3]. Common sites of RCC metastases are lungs, bone, liver and lymph nodes [3]. However, there have been reports of metastases to rare sites including urogenital organs, particularly the vagina and the vulva, which we have presented in our case [3].…”

“…Despite an increasing incidence of incidental finding of renal cancers on unplanned imaging, a third of them still have metastases at presentation [3]. This is most likely attributable to the relatively aggressive nature of RCC, with its tendency to metastasize [3].…”

“…Abdominal ultrasound is a convenient and reliable tool in the diagnosis of gallbladder tumors. Metastases can appear as hyperechoic masses bigger than 1 cm in diameter, close to the gallbladder wall without posterior acoustic shadowing [9][10][11][12]. A CT sign that can help in the differentiation between primary gallbladder tumors and metastases is the invasion of the mucosal layer.…”
