Background: When a method is unusual, the intention is very strong and then prevention becomes a big challenge; although, suicide is a preventable public health problem. Objectives: The author aimed to look into unusual methods of suicidal attempts so that they can be considered in the formulation of prevention strategies. Methods: A search was done in PubMed, PubMed Central, Google, Google Scholar, and BanglaJOL with specific searching key words between 2000 and 2017. Eventually, 23 articles were selected purposively for review. Results: Nine suicide cases were reported as unusual poisoning, eight attempts were by violent methods, four by stabbing, and another four by unusual asphyxia. The mean age of the victims was 39.96 years, ranging from 17 to 80 years old, 68% being male. A total of 18 (72%) respondents died by the act, while 28% were saved from fatal attempts. Of the victims, 36% were found to have mental disorders, i.e. 28% had depression, 4% had schizophrenia, and 4% had bipolar 1 disorder. Seven cases had notable risk factors and two had a history of previous attempts. Conclusions: Adult males are more prone to use unusual methods. Males used violent methods more than females, whereas females used more unusual poisoning methods. Asian and south Asians used more poisoning methods than those from other parts of the world.

All around the globe suicide is an increasing health problem because of the devastating effects that the loss of lives it leaves behind. There are instances when a suicide attempt is but a warning signal, a kind of cry for help, but in some cases its drastic character excludes any doubt about its annihilative aim. There are such situations in which the individuals opting for suicide try to limit the risk of failing in such act to the minimum. This article presents three suicide cases autopsied at the Bistrita-Nasaud County Forensic Division tht share the fact that they use multiple, converging methods of self-destruction: the first case is that of an elderly man who, after ingesting a significant amount of thiocarbamide pesticides, hangs himself, the second case is that of a policeman in the rural area who, upon an acute alcohol intoxication, shoots himself six bullets in the stomach with the pistol provided, and the third case is of an unknown male citizen who, after sheltering under a bridge, drinks about 600 ml of petrol, then splashed himself with petrol and sets himself on fire.

The use of an electric drill to commit suicide is rare in forensic practice. The aim of the work is to present the first case of this kind from the Upper Silesia. The results of post-mortem examinations and the results of prosecutor’s examination of case files containing medical documentation from the patient’s treatment were analyzed. People with mental disorders and diseases may choose unusual methods of taking their own lives, such as using an electric drill. This may cause investigators a lot of doubt as to whether the event was really a suicide. In addition to full post-mortem diagnostics, it is particularly important in such cases to assess the medical history of the deceased, often with the participation of a psychiatrist as a consultant.
