Atypical lipomatous tumour of the head and neck region with dyspnea and dysphagia: a case report

Abstract: Liposarcoma is one of the most common soft tissue sarcomas in adults. Atypical lipomatous tumour (ALT) rarely occurs in the head and neck region. Histopathologic grade of these tumours affect prognosis of this disease. The mainstay of treatment for ALT is surgical excision. In this article, a case of a huge ALT arising from the head and neck region and invading nearly entire left hemi-facial region is presented. Clinical and histopathologic features and therapeutic approaches related to this tumour are discuss… Show more

“…The signal intensity in fatty tissue within well-differentiated liposarcomas is the same as that in subcutaneous fat on T1-weighted MR images. Septa and other nonlipomatous elements show signal that is hypointense or isointense relative to that in muscle on T1-weighted MR images and hyperintense relative to that in muscle on T2-weighted MR images; these elements may enhance after the administration of contrast material (35).…”

“…In most pleomorphic liposarcomas, adipose tissue accounts for more than 25% of the tissue volume. Adipose material, when present in liposarcomas, may be nodular, finely reticulated, or amorphous (6,35,36). shows that most of the mass has signal hyperintense relative to that in muscle but hypointense relative to that in subcutaneous fat, with the exception of a small lobule in the superior portion of the tumor (arrow).…”

“…A small number of these cases were atypical lipomatous tumor. 4,5 According to our knowledge, a neck liposarcoma with such a large size has not yet been reported previously. Diameters exceeding 20 cm are often found in the retroperitoneal lesions.…”

“…5 Most liposarcomas are found in the extremities and retroperitoneum; however, the incidence of head and neck liposarcoma is rare. Liposarcoma of the head and neck region represents approximately 1% of head and neck sarcomas.…”
