Atypical haemorrhagic colloid cyst: 2 case reports surgical management and review of literature

Abstract: Highlights Only 15 cases of clinically diagnosed hemorrhagic colloid cysts were reported in the literature and 5 more cases on autopsy. The benefits of excellent visualization and minimally invasive access through the dilated ventricular system are offered by the endoscopic approach. Open microsurgical technique is the best choice for hemorrhagic colloid cysts.

“…Importantly, these cysts usually do not suppress on FLAIR studies and demonstrate absence of diffusion restriction on diffusion-weighted imaging. 5,6,14 In our case, the signal intensity on T1 and T2 aligns with the literature. However, notable heterogeneity in signal intensity on T2-weighted images, accompanied by blooming artifacts on susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI), corresponds to the confirmed cystic hemorrhage.…”

“…Other potential sites include diencephalic ependymoma, the invagination of the neuroepithelium within the ventricle, or the respiratory epithelium of endodermal origin. 5,10,11 These cysts account for about 15 to 20% of intraventricular masses and 0.5 to 1.0% of all primary brain tumors. 4,10,11 The utilization of CT and MRI has led to an increased identification of asymptomatic colloid cysts.…”

“…Hemorrhagic colloid cysts are highly unusual, with <20 cases and five autopsy reports in the literature to date. [2] Each of these involved a cyst located within the roof of the third ventricle, where patients presented with symptoms of acute hydrocephalus. ese included memory deficits, headaches, and/or cognitive disturbances accompanied by ventriculomegaly.…”
