Atypical Distant Metastasis of Breast Malignant Phyllodes Tumors: A Case Report and Literature Review

Abstract: Malignant phyllodes tumors (MPT) are rare breast neoplasms. Preoperative diagnosis is often challenging due to the unspecific clinical, radiological, and histological characteristics of the tumor. Dissemination pathways are local with chest wall invasion, regional with lymph nodes metastasis, and distant, hematogenous, mostly to the lungs, bones, and brain. Distant metastasis (DM) can be synchronous or appear months to years after the diagnosis and initial management. The current report describes the case of a… Show more

“…TNBC accounts for ~15% of breast cancers and is characterized by loss of expression of estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and HER2 ( 2 , 3 ). Local invasion and distant spread are the main causes of tumor progression ( 4 ). Although surgery and chemotherapy are effective, they still fail to meet expectations ( 5 ).…”

“…Because the vast majority of benign PTs (87%) have areas similar to FA on pathological sections [ 11 ], BPT is easily misdiagnosed as FA and performed with lumpectomy, and the correct diagnosis is not made until the pathological section is reviewed for recurrence after surgery. Moreover, BPT may transform into borderline and even malignant phyllodes tumors after recurrence, and distant metastasis leads to patient death [ 12 ], so there is a need to find new and reliable tumor biomarkers for differentiating BPT from FA.…”
