“…In the European rabbit, all these ways have been used to examine pup responses to odour cues emitted by the female: i) the alteration of the pup olfactory system severely disturbs nipple localization and oral seizing (Schley, 1976;Distel and Hudson, 1985;Hudson and Distel, 1986), ii) the washing or selective covering of mammary areas inhibit the attraction and/or sucking behaviour of pups (Schley, 1976;Müller, 1978;Hudson and Distel, 1983;Coureaud et al, 2001), and iii) variations in the female's physiological state, due to postpartum physiological changes or seasonal factors, induce modifications in odour emission and pup behaviour Distel, 1984, 1990;GonzalezMariscal et al, 1994;Coureaud and Schaal, 2000).…”

“…Regarding the emission side, one may recall first that the attractive factors released from the abdomen by lactating females seem tightly related to lactational physiology (Hudson and Distel, 1984;Gonzalez-Mariscal et al, 1994;Coureaud and Schaal, 2000). Thus, the drop of the MP in late lactation-milk may co-vary with the alterations in maternal physiology.…”

“…A possible role for odor cues has often been found, even in human infants [26,65,84,108,113]. It has been proposed that the dam's manipulations of pups during normal mother/infant interactions may be how rat pups form an attraction to the maternal odor and an attachment to the dam [30].…”

“…In rodents, there is indeed a reciprocal regulation of responsiveness to stress between mother and offspring (Walker et al, 2004). For example, dietary influences are critical in the modulation of the stress response and it was shown that olfactory signals were essential in the orientation to the nipples in several species of rodents (Blass & Teicher, 1980; Coureaud & Schaal, 2000; Gerling & Yahr, 1982). By reducing olfactory abilities, early bilareral naris occlusion could thus have important functional repercussions on mother–pup interaction and notably on the offspring's suckling behavior.…”
