Determining nursing students' attitudes and empathic tendencies regarding aged discrimination

Asked about the motivation as to why they would be willing to provide care to older people, the students gave the following responses: (i) they require care, (ii) I will also get old one day, (iii) it is my social task, (iv) they need to be supported more than others, (v) I want to empathize with the older individuals in my family, and (v) delivering services to older people gives me a feeling of personal dignity 6,16,26,29 . Our study has found no difference between willingness to work with older people after graduation and the ETS.…”

“…Yazıcı et al reported that 58% of the nursing students who participated in their study expressed having lived with one or more older individuals in the same household 4 . Past research has provided evidence that factors, such as living with an older individual and the residence area did not influence attitudes towards older people 1,8,16‐18,32 . The results of the current study show that while the residence area of the students does not have any influence on their emphatic approach, the experience of living with an older individual influence this respect, namely that those who had never lived with an older person in the same household have higher average scores in respect of empathic approach.…”

On the other hand, research also exists that reported negative attitudes of students towards elderly people 16,17 . It is therefore important, in this context, to improve the positive attitudes and empathic approach of healthcare professionals towards older people to enhance the quality of healthcare services delivered to the older population.…”
