Attitudes of Registered Nurses Toward Nurse Practitioners

Abstract: One identified concern was that scores indicated RNs felt that they received limited respect from NPs. Although the scores were high in this category, some RNs had concerns that NPs might not respect or understand the difficulty of the RN role in providing patient care. NPs need to recognize their collegial and professional ties to RNs and should take time to provide positive feedback to RNs as they collaborate to provide health care. Such behavior would only solidify the health team approach.

“…Nurses without academic accreditation, as well as those employed in nonmanagement or nontraining positions, who took part in our study revealed a less enthusiastic attitude to the expansion of the scope of nursing practice. Based on conclusions in Gooden & Jackson's study (2004), garnering nurse's support for the change might be achieved through clarifying the different levels and fields of nursing practice and by taking steps to reinforce their sense of professional security.…”

“…Although there are many studies demonstrating roles, quality of care given and studies of physician attitudes and response to PAs, it is notable that there are not many studies looking at the response of nursing staff to PAs or other midlevel providers. The author only knows of one study specifically surveying registered nurses and their response to nurse practitioners 29 …”

“…Other investigators corroborate these findings and additionally reported that RNs felt they received limited respect from NPs. 11 We ascribe the periodic tensions between the nurses and NPs to several factors. In certain situations, seasoned RNs may view the NPs as a threat to their autonomy and independence.…”
